Gender mainstreaming has been integrated into current Eight Malaysia Plan (2001-2005) and the Third Outline Perspectives Plan (2001-2010).  The former focuses on enhancing women’s status to guarantee their position as equal partners in national development.  The later stresses the establishment of a flexible nation by enhancing women’s role in development.  The Ministry of Women and Family Development is the national machinery aiming at the advancement of women and the enhancement of the family institution.  To efficiently achieve these objectives, the Ministry actively cooperates with private sectors and NGOs, and establishes interior committees and technical working groups in charge of the monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the gender mainstreaming.

To increase women’s participation in economy, the government and NGOs are making efforts on providing easy access for women in business to capital and skills training.  In addition, the government has carried out a special program for rural women to improve their living quality by increasing their income and building their capacities.  It also provides financial package and economic incentives to increase women’s involvement in SMEs and Micro-Enterprises.  These financial facilities include funding for business operations, special funding scheme for women entrepreneurs, and special fund for the development of women entrepreneurs.  With the recognition of the significance of sex disaggregated data, the government is currently developing a Gender Disaggregated Database Information System (GDIS).  Further detail is available at http://www.kpwk.gov.my/
